Superior Woodcraft, Inc. Named NARI 2009 Regional CotY Winner

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) named Superior Woodcraft, Inc., in Doylestown, Pa, 2009 Regional CotY Winner in the Residential Interior Under $100,000 category of its annual awards competition.
Contractors from seven regions around the country vie for CotY Awards on an annual basis, and all regional winners will now be eligible for National CotY Awards at NARI’s Evening of ExcellenceSM on March 28th at the Atlanta Sheraton in downtown Atlanta Georgia. Most projects submitted for judging were an improvement or an addition to an existing structure, with the exception of one category, “Residential Exterior Specialty.” Otherwise, new construction projects were not eligible. In addition, competing projects were completed between July 1, 2007 and November 30, 2008 (a 17-month time period) and were not submitted in prior NARI National contests. Judging for regional awards took place at the Association’s national headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois, in mid-January. An impartial panel of judges who are experts within the industry and associated fields selected winners based on each entrant’s “before and after” photography and project description. Judging was based on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty, and entry presentation.

Forestry and the Carbon Cycle

Many people do not give much thought to the entire carbon cycle and the life cycle of forests. We all know that trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen and that trees are an extremely important part of our well being. However, many of us do not realize that trees store carbon in the its roots, trunk and limbs. Most of us also do not realize that growing forest rapidly absorb carbon. Mature forests are mostly in a state of equilibrium in that they are releasing as much carbon as they are storing. Additionally, most people do not realize that after a tree is harvested the carbon that the tree absorbed continues to stay sequestered in the form of wood until that wood either decays or is burned. This means that long lasting durable wood products and wooden antiques can be thought of as carbon vaults since that carbon continues to be locked up. By proper management techniques a forest can become sustainable and be a good tool for storing carbon. As trees are harvested and storing the carbon new trees are planted and the whole cycle repeats itself.
Sustainable forests also provide diversified habitat for wildlife, help keep our streams and river clean, provide oxygen and provide many other benefits for our enjoyment.
