Join the Craftsmen at Superior Woodcraft in Celebrating American Craft Week

Bucks County has long been known for its abundance of artists and craftsmen.  October 1st thru Oct 10th is American Craft Week and is an opportunity to celebrate the work of our local craftsmen.  Superior Woodcraft is home to some of the finest cabinet makers, wood finishers and designers within the industry.  Join us in celebrating not only their work, but the fine work of all American Craftsmen.

It's an opportunity to celebrate the wonders of American craft. Every day thousands of American artists share their vision and talent by producing amazing hand-made decorative and functional objects. And every day thousands of craft retailers share their love of these items by displaying, promoting and selling them. As one craft artist put it, "this is the creative economy!"

American Craft enriches our homes, wardrobes, offices and public spaces. It contributes to our nation's economy, our balance of trade, and the fabric of our national history. It is original, beautiful and enduring, so let's tell the world!

CRAFT is an association of galleries, shops, schools and artist that are dedicated to presenting work with one common characteristic - it's handmade in the U.S.A. The goal of CRAFT is to promote awareness of American made craft through marketing, networking, education and communications programs.

Buying products produced by American Craftsmen is a great way to buy local and support local businesses.

Buy Local - Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. Kat Robbins Interiors Loves "Green" Paints

If some TV show knocked on my door with a sustainable design challenge and allowed me to choose one product to use to transform a space, it would be paint. No contest.

But the sustainable-ness of paint goes way beyond no VOCs. It is the most versatile tool in your repertoire for low cost, high impact change. Here are some great ways to use paint to update and improve your space without hiring a professional.

First and most obviously:

---Walls: A fresh coat in a new color can feel transformative. Take a look at design magazines, retail catalogs and paint store color forecasts for trends that will bring your room up to date. An accent wall that pulls color from a bold accessory, pillow or piece of art will draw attention and add interest.

Next, get on all fours:

--Floors: Tired, scratched and damaged hardwood floors? No worries. Clever use of durable, semi-gloss paint can bring new life and color to your floor. All kinds of patterns can be employed to create the look you want. Wide stripes can trick the eye to make a space look bigger, a painted tromp l’oeil rug suggests an intimate seating area or start some drama with large checkerboard squares. Be sure to clean floors thoroughly, sand and prime before painting. Then, go crazy with your design. You won’t have the expense of replacing floors or the environmental impact either.

Start sanding:

--Furniture: This is an area where you will need to be a little bit handy. But once you do some basic prep, you can turn flea market finds into super cool stuff you’ll never get tired of. And if you do, you can always repaint it. An outdated double dresser from your childhood bedroom can end up as a high drama sideboard in your dining room. Reusing furniture is a great sustainable practice.

Be sure to sand all surfaces and remove hardware. Remove drawers. Wipe your whole piece down with tack cloth. Prime with the most adhesive primer you can get your hands on that is still low VOC. Some ideas for high style looks: very glossy black or white paint, metallics, drawers a different color from frame, modern hardware, stripes, hand painted accents (birds, leaves, etc.) Be sure to allow several days for paint to cure before replacing drawers.

There are now several green and sustainable paints and finishes available on the market. Even traditional paint companies are making "green" paints.  Below is just a list of a few green products. Visit Superior Woodcraft’s Blog for links to many more green finishes and other resources. Loof for the resource links on the left side of the blog.

HAFELE PROVIDES LED LIGHTING EDUCATION AT SUPERIOR WOODCRAFT

Hafele presented to more than 25 architects, designers and contractors at Superior Woodcraft in Doylestown, PA. Hafele educated our guests on LED lighting and specific lighting applications. Karen Armour, Hafele’s Product Sourcing Manager, gave a wonderful presentation about lighting, lighting applications and LED lighting. The entire Hafele team, Karen Armour, Daryle Nauman, Ed Cohen, Ed Stone and Jessica Earhart then educated everyone with interactive LED displays. This was truly a fantastic education. Everyone learned more about lighting and how to use light to improve living environments. We learned how LED lighting can reduce energy costs. LED lights use less energy to produce light. They also produce less heat, which reduces the load for air conditioners thereby reducing energy consumption. These benefits coupled with a long life span make LED lighting a very sustainable lighting option.

Hafele provides LED lighting solutions to the cabinetry and furniture industries. Hafele offers the efficiency of LED lighting in a variety of styles and configurations making it easy to find the perfect illumination for any project. All with the features that make LED lighting a favorite for designers, craftsmen and end users.

Benefits of LED lighting include:

• Lower maintenance and energy costs
• Low heat emission
• Long-lasting (30,000 hours or more)
• No UV rays to fade colors or fabrics
• Easy installation

LED Ribbon Strip

Whimsical LED Ribbon Lights are commonly used in home theatres. They have extremely low heat generation and can last more than 30,000 hours.

We thank the entire Hafele team for making the educational event a success for everyone. We look forward to our next event with our partners at Hafele.

Craft Distilling - An Emerging Movement

This year at SBN's Green Chic Living and the Southern Vermont Art & Craft Festival held at Hildene we noticed something new. We noticed that artisan distillers were becoming more visible and popular. These artisans carefully craft their small batches of spirits using fine local ingredients and much care and attention. If you like vodka, gin, absinthe or maple syrup - yes maple syrup then you should check out these interesting craft distillers. If you want to read some interesting stories and see how some local businesses are focusing on quality products and sustainable operations you will also be interested in their unique American made stories.

Philadelphia Distilling is the first craft distillery in Pennsylvania since Prohibition and is the micro-distller of the award winning Bluecoat American Dry Gin. Philadelphia Distilling is committed to reducing its carbon footprint through using innovative engineering and techniques to lower power usage. The grain that is used is from local Pennsylvania farms. The spent grains are exchanged with local farmers who use the grain as farm feed and fertilizer. Also, the bottles are made from partially recycled glass. By keeping sourcing, packaging and distribution local Philadelphia Distilling is reducing the embedded energy in its products. Philadelphia Distilling makes Penn 1681 Rye Vodka, Bluecoat American Dry Gin and Vieux Carre’ Absinthe.

Moving to the New England states we find that Vermonters are using their local ingredients, milk sugar and maple sap, to make some fine spirits. Who would have ever thought that you could make fine drinks from milk and maple sap?

Created in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom Vermont Spirits vodkas are hand-crafted in New England’s Green Mountain State. Originally established in 1998, the company has made steady strides over the years, and our vodkas are now available throughout New England and New York State.

Vermont Gold Vodka is pure, delicate, unflavored vodka, handmade in small batches from the sugar of maple sap, the very essence of Vermont. Vermont White Vodka is triple-distilled in small batches from pure milk-sugar and local spring water. Limited Release Vodka is produced entirely from early run maple sap.

Finally we have Sapling Vermont Maple Liqueur by Sapling Liqueur. This is a premium liqueur capturing the quintessential Vermont taste. Sapling is brewed utilizing the finest quality Vermont Grade A maple syrup and refined ultra-pure spirits. This liqueur is rich and full bodied, but the sweetness is not overpowering. It is a refined sweetness unique to maple sugar. Sapling Vermont maple liqueur combines old-word heritage with the flavor of Vermont.

Sampling these spirits was interesting.   Each was as unique and interesting as the companies themselves.  It will be interesting to watch how craft distilling develops.  There is truly a local flavor with these companies. What are the local crops in your area that will find their way into your local artisan distillers' spirits?

These products make fine gifts and create interesting conversations.
