My Home Forever

How would you think of your home and community if you knew that generation after generation you and then your descendents would be living there forever? There are a few of us who are doing that – I can think of three families in my Yardley neighborhood who are at least three and as many as five generations here. Most of us are transient in a generational sense, living in our chosen communities for the amenities and convenience, arriving here because of a job or like me because of marriage. In general we think of moving to other places as a common thing and of our children moving away as what children do. But for the sake of argument, what if our children planned to have our home when we are gone and then our grandchildren and so on for generations – would that change anything about the way we live today?

I lived in two homes growing up. The first was in Mount Aire in Philadelphia and then in a grand stone giant in Chestnut Hill. After I graduated from U of P and was on my way, my parents sold their house-painters-paradise, downsizing to a more suitable size for the two of them. I drive by the old houses every now and then to point out to my children the windows of my bedrooms and recollect a story or two of the gatherings we had there.

I have fond memories, but my children just say “oh, Dad,” in a humor-him-a-bit way. In reality I don’t think of the old neighborhoods much or remember the neighbors who have themselves long moved on. Some memories, yes, but no long term commitment.

For the core of Yardley and some of the old towns in Bucks County there is undoubtedly a generational sense of things. One of my employees is a third generation firefighter whose family hales from Langhorne. I went to the Yardley Borough party last December which honored all the volunteers in the Borough who help out in whatever capacity. There were dozens of folks there – not only those associated with the fire department, but council-people, tot-lot people, YBA members, planning commission, etc – an amazing group considering the size of our town. So in a sense we are all passing on the skills and knowledge of our forefathers so that the community can continue to get better and better.

This core is good, really good. Some might say it is the very essence of our democracy, what makes us a strong nation, an indivisible nation. Yet, I am perturbed by the throw-away culture that is also a strong part of who we have become. We are a people disconnected from the land that grows our food, the energy that fuels our autos and homes, the trash we pile on the curb and the pollutants that we eject into our rivers and air. In the pursuit of our responsibilities to our families we put out of our minds these externalities. We may think these are externalities, but unfortunately bad things do happen to good people, well meaning people, even responsible people. And when 5 billion people do these things the consequences will be untenable.

Maybe I am dreaming, but if each of us really is going to leave our home and community to our very children and grandchildren might we make them independent of foreign oil, less polluting, more durable, less toxic, well maintained, and functional no matter what stage we are in our life cycle. It makes sense if I want to live in My Home Forever.

Superior Woodcraft Salutes - Independent We Stand & Stihl

Superior Woodcraft's motto during this recession has been, "Acting locally, together, we can all help each other through these trying economic times.  The only support and assistance we need is each other." We are now seeing that individuals and independent companies are doing just that - supporting themselves and their communities. Check out what Stihl, Inc and Independent We Stand are doing to help all independent businesses.

Superior Woodcraft salutes Stihl, Inc. for supporting and promoting independently owned businesses.  Thanks for funding Independent We Stand.

Local businesses across the country now have a new champion in the form of Independent We Stand, a national movement of independent business owners educating their communities on the benefits of shopping at local stores.

“This project began as a way to inform friends and neighbors on one of the best ways to revive our economy: buy local,” said Bill Brunelle, Independent We Stand spokesperson. “Buying products and services from people who work and live in your town means more money goes back to your local area. Through taxes, payrolls, and the business owner’s own local purchases, that reinvestment stays where you live, making your own community a better place.”

Independently owned businesses provide numerous benefits to their local economies that most people might not be aware of. According to recent studies*:

When you spend $100 at an independent business, $68 returns to the local community. Spend that same amount at a national chain and it drops to $43.

Small business accounts for 75% of all new jobs.

Locally owned businesses reinvest in the local economy at a 60% higher rate than chains and internet retailers.

Small businesses create more than half the non-farm private gross domestic product (GDP).

Locally owned and operated businesses create higher-paying jobs for you and your neighbors.

More of your tax dollars are reinvested in your community to fund local schools, hire more police officers and improve roads.

The Independent We Stand website also provides tools for businesses and consumers to further the cause. The newly launched site, IndependentWeStand.org, features a database of locally owned businesses across the country, a resource center for business owners to share news and statistics on the importance of buying local, and posters and flyers to help promote the message.

“All socially responsible businesses, big or small, help our economy remain vibrant,” said Brunelle. “Our goal with Independent We Stand, however, is to give locally owned, independent businesses a bigger voice to talk about the important contributions they make.”

Independent We Stand is funded in part by STIHL Inc., a manufacturer of outdoor power equipment that has never sold its products through mass merchants and sells through thousands of independently owned servicing dealers across the country. For more information, to pledge your support for locally owned businesses, or to register your own business in the database, visit http://www.independentwestand.org/.

Stihl, Inc is owned by Andreas Stihl AG is a privately held company. Stihl Incorporated, the company's American manufacturing arm, employs nearly 2,000 people at its Virginia Beach complex.

A Recipe for Fall Produce

Well....the tomatoes are gone, the corn is over. But wait........apples, more varieties than we can imagine and spring greens as well as the repeat of broccoli and cauliflower.  We forget that Fall also provides delicious local produce.

I had a version of this recipe at Zahav in Philly. Its easy to make and is spicy and bold. Enjoy!

Warm Cauliflower Salad

• 12 cups cauliflower florets (from about 4 pounds cauliflower)

• 1 large onion, peeled, quartered

• 1 teaspoon coriander seeds

• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

• 3/4 cup olive oil

• 1/2 cup red wine vinegar

• 3 1/2 teaspoons curry powder

• 1 tablespoon Hungarian hot paprika

• 1 3/4 teaspoons salt

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 450°F. Place cauliflower florets in large roasting pan. Pull apart onion quarters into separate layers; add to cauliflower. Stir coriander seeds and cumin seeds in small skillet over medium heat until slightly darkened, about 5 minutes. Crush coarsely in mortar with pestle. Place seeds in medium bowl. Whisk in oil, vinegar, curry powder, paprika, and salt. Pour dressing over vegetables; toss to coat. Spread vegetables in single layer. Sprinkle with pepper.

Roast vegetables until tender, stirring occasionally, about 35 minutes. (Can be made 2 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature. Rewarm in 450°F oven 10 minutes, if desired.)

Mound vegetables in large bowl. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro. Serve warm or at room temperature.

The Making of a Sustainable Home in Chester County- 5th Update

We have begun in earnest to mill the trees we were required to destroy and form them into lumber for the new home. Here, several hickory trees are milled on site for flooring in two of the upstairs bedrooms. In all, there were close to 80 trees that were harvested for the construction of our new home. For many of the trees, we will continue to enjoy them in a new form. After we are finished building, we will replant at least 50 new trees and rebuild and manage the forest for the long term.

This action at 60 Bragg Hill will complete a closed carbon loop and sequester or "bank" carbon for a long time. How? When trees absorb C02 (carbon dioxide) and release O2 (oxygen). The C or carbon portion of the CO2 gas is retained by the tree and stored in the form of wood. Yes, think of wood as a carbon bank. Carbon will be stored in the form of wood until it either rots or is burned. The building process at 60 Bragg Hill will require the removal of trees, but the wood will be used in the building process; thereby sequestering or "banking" carbon. The banked carbon will remain stored until the home is destroyed. Hopefully, this won't occur for hundreds of years! While older trees were cut down the stewards of 60 Bragg Hill will replant news trees and manage the forest. The young trees will grow, sequester more carbon and store it as wood; thus the system is complete and closed.

Additionally, the stewards of 60 Bragg Hill are using materials from that were grown right on site. There is no energy expended for transporting the wood. This helps reduced the embedded energy in the building materials. Also, since the wood is not being transported the opportunity for pests, diseases, invasive and noxious plants and animals to hitch a ride and spread over hundreds or thousands of miles is eliminated. The real costs of pests, diseases, invasive and noxious plants and animals are very high, but often overlooked. By milling the trees onsite and using that wood for their home the stewards of 60 Bragg Hill have reduced the likelihood of spreading these unwanted and damaging invaders.

Overview:

The making of a substainable home (Pa Eco-House) in Chester, County, PA is known as 60 Bragg Hill. The project is a co-operative effort of the entire design team - Barney and Nancy Leonard (homeowners), noted “green” architect Matthew Moger, contractor Mark W. Thompson, Superior Woodcraft, Inc. and others.
