Change Can Save ¢hange

Have you ever had the weird experience of coming back from an extended vacation or time away and you feel as if you are seeing your home for the first time? This has happened to me a few times and it is always very enlightening.

The first things I usually notice are things that seemed invisible before my departure- the lack of window treatments in a room, clutter that heretofore looked like artful arrangement, wonky and incongruous color combinations; lastly uninspiring furniture placement.

Here’s the cure (even if you are not fresh from your vacay in the Bahamas):

  • Choose a room that needs a lift. Typically not the bedroom, since most have only one place that you could logically place the bed.
  • Get yourself some plastic furniture movers that go under the legs of heavy pieces. You can find them at any hardware store.
  • Take all lighting, accessories, plants etc out of the room. Clean everything! And, I do mean really clean everything!
  • Have some fun moving furniture around. Think outside the box and keep moving the major pieces, exhausting all possible combinations. Sometimes the most unexpected arrangement will yield a better traffic pattern, open up space for other uses and just be more pleasing to the eye.
  • Once you’ve decided on a new layout, “shop” other rooms in your house for accessories and lighting that may be a better fit for your chosen room.
  • Swap out, edit, rearrange. Have some fun with it. I bet you have some pretty cool stuff you either stopped noticing or have shoved in a corner or closet somewhere.
There you have it! You successfully re-energized your interior, made better use of space and created variety (spice of life!) without spending a dime.
