President Obama Visits Bucks County's Gamesa Plant

I had the opportunity to hear President Obama speak at a town hall meeting hosted by Gamesa Corporation at their Fairless Hills, Pa manufacturing facility. Gamesa is a Spanish manufacturing company, which manufactures wind turbines and constructs wind farms. There are several wind farms operating in Pennsylvania and more planned for the future. Allegheny Ridge Wind Farm is Pennsylvania's largest and was built by Gamesa.

President Obama visted Gamesa to highlight his goal that 80 percent of the nation's energy comes from clean sources by 2035. Addressing a question by a Gamesa engineer about smart grids, President Obama endorsed the development of a "smart grid," which he said would allow energy to be sent where it needs to go with less wasted transmission.

President Obama also stated that there was no easy or quick solution to lowering energy prices in the near term. He did chide one Gamesa employee for driving a gas guzzler and suggested that he trade it on for a more fuel efficient car made by General Motors, Chrysler or Ford.

In addition to renewable sources like wind and solar, the President’s proposal would also include natural gas, nuclear power and coal that has been processed to remove carbon.

President Obama’s proposal for renewable and alternative energy sources should be of great interest to Pennsylvanians. In addition to the Gamesa wind farms, Pennsylvania also has strong interests in coal and natural gas. One can say that Pennsylvania was built on coal. With Pennsylvania’s vast supply of coal it has been a long standing energy source in Pennsylvania.

With the recent developments in the Marcellus Shale Range natural gas has become a hot topic for Pennsylvania. The presence of an enormous volume of now recoverable gas in Pennsyvlania has a great economic significance. Marcellus natural gas will have the advantage of being the closest natural gas to the high population areas of the United States. However, there are some environmental concerns from the newer drilling technology needed to extract the Marcellus natural gas.
