It's Curtains For You

I have had many clients tell me they don’t need window treatments and their reasons are multiple. Either they like the view, want to maximize natural light, have already exceeded their design budget or when they think of draperies they are reminded of old ladies and chintz.  I certainly understand these sentiments and budget constraints.  I find it interesting that the more vehement a client's opposition to window treatments, the more enthusiastic the response seems to be when they finally see the benefits of them. If you hold similar prejudices, here are a few compelling points to consider when you look at those gaping holes in your decor.

Energy Efficency

Adding draperies or shades to a window can greatly reduce energy consumption.  In summer, I challenge you to stand in front of a window with the sun beaming in, despite the ambient temperature of the room, and not break a sweat. Direct sunlight can heat up a room quickly, making your AC work harder than it needs to. In winter, insulation from draperies retain heat and lower your utility bill. Close your shades and drapes at night to keep your home warmer.

Light Control

Making sure light comes in when and where you want it is imperative to your comfort. We know that during the day, natural light is crucial; it improves mood, boosts energy and even increases productivity. At night, a dark room is essential for sound sleep. Even a tiny bit of light from street lamps or cars can disrupt sleep patterns. And let’s face it, when it comes to watching sports, die hard fans everywhere lament the poor screen quality that sun glare can create. Window treatments are the solution to these common problems.

Sheer Beauty

I won’t deny it. I used to think of window treatments as an afterthought. But I have seen whole rooms transformed from basic to breathtaking with the right window dressing. The placement/size of a window often makes me want to treat it like a grand lady. With the correct fabric, trim, and installation - your draperies, shades, valances and cornices become the jewelry of your design.

So, give your windows the treatment they deserve and you will be rewarded with both beauty and comfort.
