The Market at Del Val Hosts Pink Day

The Market at DelVal will host Pink Day, a breast cancer fundraiser on Saturday, June 4th at 11 a.m. as part of the Invincibelle® Spirit Campaign to raise $1 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The event is open to the public and will be located at 2100 Lower State Road, Doylestown, PA.

The Market at DelVal will host a Pink Day preview party with Young Survival Coalition of Greater Philadelphia on Friday, June 3rd, 6-9pm. YSC will have crafts and will be painting nails pink to get ready for the pink outfit contest the next day. Dog’s Playing cards will perform from 6-9pm while guests’ enjoy tasting wine from Best of Bucks’ Rose Bank Winery.

Beginning at 11a.m., the public is invited to dress in pink clothing and costumes, and enjoy live music, food from local vendors, and participate in contests and raffles to win prizes. Live band performers will be Ron Schmitz and Sycamore, just to name a few. Some contests include best pink outfit and best cancer supportive t-shirt. Guest speaker YSC’s Jeanne Donahue, a breast cancer survivor from Hatboro, will share her story and talk about the importance of early detection and finding a cure.

“We chose to get involved in this campaign because breast cancer is a cause that is close to many of our customers. Approximately one in eight women run the risk of developing breast cancer at some point in her life, so we all know someone who has been affected by this disease. Hosting this event is a great opportunity to have fun and raise money for a good cause,” said Dave Fleming, from The Market at DelVal by Shady Brook Farm.

The Invincibelle® Spirit campaign gathers support from garden centers across North America in a joint effort to host fundraisers for BCRF. As part of the campaign, garden centers will also be displaying the new Invincibelle® Spirit pink ‘Annabelle’ hydrangea. For every Invincibelle® Spirit hydrangea sold, $1.00 will be donated to the BCRF. Like the women who have survived breast cancer, this new hydrangea is resilient and can withstand extreme conditions. It blooms from mid-summer to fall, even after harsh winters, making it a wonderful pink addition for your garden.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the BCRF for this event because they have been consistently recognized as one of the top rated cancer organizations. For every dollar the BCRF receives, a minimum of 85 cents goes towards research and awareness programs, so we know the money is going to the right place to help find a cure for breast cancer,” concluded Karen Campellone.

The Market at Del Val will have The Cancer Institute from Doylestown Hospital, Heart- Hand with healing massage, Initials Inc. signature items, Synergy Integrative Health, Sunboat Tan, Green Changes and Tomboy Tools to name a few.

60 Bragg Hill is Teaming with Activity

60 Bragg Hill is a busy beehive these days. The finished elements are starting to be installed and it is starting to look more and more like the finished home. Some of the latest elements include a traditional barn cupola sits proudly atop 60 Bragg Hill. From a visual standpoint, besides the stone chimney it is one of the strongest architectural elements of the home. The 6 windows installed in the cupola are an integral part of the home’s natural heating and cooling system. Designed as the peak of the internal solar chimney, the remote controlled windows will open to vent out the natural convective heat of summer. During this venting, cooler fresh air enters the home from the lower level and is naturally drawn through the open central stairway chamber and ultimately to the cupola where the warmer air exits through the windows. This design creates a natural flow of cool air through the home.

The door mat isn’t in place, but the guests are already arriving. Part of Barney Leonard’s vision of building 60 Bragg Hill is to use the home as a living classroom and invite guests to view the home during the building stage. On May 21 60 Bragg Hill will be part of the Green Home Caravan Tour in Chester County, which is a Delaware Valley Green Building Council event – Event Flyer.

You’ll be hearing a lot more about 60 Bragg Hill during the spring and summer - as the Thompson Builders crew kicks into high gear.  Everyone wishes this rain would just clear up for a few days!

May is National Home Improvement Month - Come Celebrate With US

May is National Home Improvement Month.  Superior Woodcraft, Inc and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) are celebrating by offering homeowners advice for getting the most value out of their remodeling investment. Here are our tips:

  • Curb appeal goes a long way. In terms of re-sale value, updated exteriors give sellers an edge over buyers who are attracted to your home before entering.
  • All homes benefit from increased insulation and sealing, regardless of climate. Proper insulation evens temperature flows, reduces energy use and has long-term benefits.  This is the best investment you will make - start saving money today.
  • Kitchen and bath renovations are still popular-and for good reason. Homeowners continue to see the value in updating areas of the home that are used frequently and are high functioning.
  • How Much Should I Spend to Remodel My Kitchen?
  • The most important step is finding a professional remodeling contractor for your job.  NARI and Superior Woodcraft can help you.

Amazing Maze

People often overlook their carpets when they think about sustainable living. The dominant yarn construction in rugs uses polyamides (nylons) and polypropylene as well as polyester. Just by looking at the names of these materials you can quickly guess that carpets are not the greenest products in the world. Just recently this situation has improved.

Mohawk’s Smartstrand carpet with DuPont's Sorona polymer is one of the greenest, most stain resistant carpets produced to date. This carpet exclusively offers fiber made with Bio-PDO™. Bio-PDO, the key ingredient in Dupont’s Sonora polymer is produced from corn sugar as opposed to petroleum which normal nylon is made from. The Sorona polymer provides the following environmental benefits:

• Producing the Sorona® polymer requires 30 percent less energy than the production of an equal amount of nylon. This energy reduction results in approximately one gallon of gasoline saved per every seven square yards of carpet.
• Producing the Sorona® polymer lowers gas emissions by 63 percent compared to manufacturing of nylon.
• By utilizing this new technology, 37 percent of Sorona® is being made from renewable resources
• The corn utilized in the production of Sorona® is grown and processed in the United States

Product durability is one of the most important factors when comes to sustainability. It takes a lot of energy to create new products. By utilizing durable products we don’t need replacements as often; therefore saving energy. In most cases durable products also provide the most value for our money over the product’s lifespan. So, how does SmartStrand® carpet rate in durability?

The superior stain resistance of SmartStrand® carpet is engineered into the fiber and will never wear or wash off, meaning consumers will never need to retreat the carpet with stain protectors after steam cleaning. Certified durability tests have confirmed that SmartStrand®carpets perform better than PET polyester and comparable to or better than nylon.

SmartStrand® carpets look to be a sustainable choice and now you really can say that corn is found everywhere – even in your carpet.

Kara Angotti Visits Superior Woodcraft

Last week Kara Angotti of KO Angotti, a woman owned interior design and energy audit firm, ventured from Philadelphia to Doylestown to visit Superior Woodcraft. Kara’s integrated approach to interior design and energy consumption is exciting. One part of Kara's approach is to source local products.  Kara searches the area for local artisans who create unique quality furnishings for the home, which is why Superior Woodcraft is shining brightly on Kara’s radar screen. Instead of rambling on about our conversation take the opportunity to eavesdrop on the  discussion between Kara Angotti of KO Angotti and Superior Woodcraft’s Patrick Kennedy. Please come and join us.
