Got Power?
With the rash of recent hurricanes, tropical storms and now early winter snow falls many have been experiencing frequent loss of power to their homes. This could mean no heat, no cooking, no running water and worse – no Face Book updates. How can one cope with the loss of basic essentials required in today’s civilized world? Backup generators are the answer. Now home generators are better and more affordable. You can utilize a small portable unit or buy a large generator that will power your entire home that turns on automatically.
We used to think that generators were used only by large institutions, like hospitals, or used by rural folk. Today, it seems like you are just as likely to lose power in a town as you are in the back woods. As a result more and more people are turning to this backup source of power.
Here are some key considerations when purchasing a backup generator:
• Determine the size generator needed to power your home or parts of your home
• Determine if you want a portable unit or a fixed unit
• Think about fuel source – gas, diesel, propane, natural gas
• If you are powering sensitive electronics – like computers, stereos, TVs or anything with a microprocessor you will want to have a unit that generates “clean” electricity. Discuss this with your generator dealer
• Think about a manual or automatic transfer switch
• Get quotes from qualified installers
• Never run a generator inside a home or garage
As with most things in life there are tradeoffs when selecting a generator. Everyone has unique needs and individual budgets; so work with your generator retailer to find a solution that is right for you.
Now you won’t be in the dark when the next storms hit and creates power outages. Just be prepared to host friends and family who want to come in out the dark cold nights.
We want to hear from you. What are your power outage stories?

Warm Wood Floors Heat Up the Kitchen
Carlisle Wide Plank Floors, Warmboard and Superior Woodcraft hosted architects, interior designers and contractors Thursday evening to discuss three of today’s popular trends in the home ~ Wide Plank Floors, beautiful custom Kitchens, and Radiant Heat. Greater numbers of homeowners understand that the kitchen is a critical part of the home. This space must be practical, durable, beautiful, comfortable and inviting. As one guest noted, “Every time we entertain our guests gather with us in the kitchen and only one or two people are in the great room watching the game. The party always occurs in the kitchen!”
Carlisle Wide Plank Floors, Warmboard and Superior Woodcraft understand the importance of a well functioning space that is as beautiful as it is useful and comfortable; especially the kitchen. The three companies teamed up for this the event to help architects, interior designers and contractors create and deliver outstanding living spaces for homeowners.
Dan McMillan, Shanon Sterrett from Carlisle Wide Plank Floors, Greg Pine from Warmboard and Patrick Kennedy and the Superior Woodcraft staff thank all of our guests for sharing an enjoyable evening together exploring wide plank floors, radiant heat and beautiful kitchens. It was a fun and educational evening for everyone.

Shop for Value and You Won't Go Wrong
We all heard the saying, “ You get what you pay for.” Here are some examples that demonstrate times where it makes practical sense to spend more money.
In the post, It’s all about value: explaining the cost of custom items it was stressed that value received is the more important than price. The post explained that value is a function of the utility received minus the price (V=U-P). When the utility received is greater than the price paid you have real value. Price is what you pay and value is what you get. This boring economic explanation is well explained in simple terms in the post, 10 Things You Should Pay More For – meaning that sometimes paying a higher price is worth it because you are gaining more value.
The best ways to capture the most value for your hard earned money include:
Buy products with a guarantee
While you might spend more upfront, getting a product that you can depend on for life is worth the extra cost. Products with good guarantees, which are backed by the company are usually higher quality products.
Shop at retailers with good customer service
We often don’t appreciate good customer service until we experience bad customer service and then we understand the real cost. When you experience good customer service stick with that company – it’s a proven winner.
Home Improvement –
Buy Quality Materials & Craftsmanship
Choosing the right contractor is one part to a successful home improvement, but choosing quality materials can be more important. It costs lots of money to do home improvements. If you choose a great contractor, but cheap materials you’ll be doing the same project again no matter how good the contractor. If pay a little more and select quality materials that last longer you’ll actually be saving money in the long run.
Remember that receiving higher value is the most important part of determining whether something is truly a bargain or whether it was just a cheap product at a low price and doesn't provide real value. Price is what you pay. Value is what you get. If you shop for value you’ll never make the wrong decision.

The Coolest Vegetables
As the harvest season starts to dwindle down, some of the coolest vegetables start to show their pretty faces. That’s right, my friends, squash. Everything from acorn to butternut and carnival to spaghetti, even pumpkins! These durable, nutrient packed, flavorful vegetables have become a big hit over the past few years and are becoming quite common in grocery stores. However, for the best selection, head over to your local farm market, such as The Market at DelVal for those in the Doylestown area.
“Great,” you think, “they look neat, but what on earth am I supposed to do with it?!” As they have increased in popularity, so has the amount of uses! Baking, grilling, steaming, mashing, the fun has just begun! JustFood and Confection Perfection at The Market at DelVal have been using the squash and pumpkins for soups, muffins, cookies, tarts, and pies.
But wait! Before you go slicing and dicing, dust of your cornucopia and put it back in its rightful spot: the middle of the dining room table overflowing with gourds, Indian corn, and beautiful squash. And then when you’re ready to cook, use them up! They can store for quite some time when kept out of sunlight and in temperatures around 55°F (refrigeration is not recommended).
While most of these squash and pumpkins are part of the same species, they have different flavors and uses. Let’s go over some of the recommended uses for the most common varieties and uses:
Variety Method Application
Acorn Roast or Grilled Stuffed, Sliced
Butternut Roast or Steam Soup
Carnival Roast or Steam Butter & Herbs, Soup
Delicata Roast or Steam Mashed
Spaghetti Roast or Boil Toss with Sauce of Choice
Pumpkin Roast Baked Goods
Lest we forget the seeds! Most of us are familiar with pumpkin seeds, but all of these other squash have seeds as well. They are generally a tad smaller in size, but just as tasty. Here is a recipe to try this fall whenever you are expecting company or just want a snack for yourself.
Sweet & Salty Pumpkin Seeds
Ingredients
2 cups pumpkin seeds, clean of pulp, rinsed, and patted dry
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons brown sugar
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350°
2. Mix pumpkin seeds with butter, syrup, salt, and cinnamon
3. Spread on a parchment paper lined baking sheet in a single layer
4. Bake until seeds puff, harden, and start to turn golden, about 15 minutes.

WHAT ARE YOU EATING THIS WINTER?
The locavore movement is extending its reach beyond traditional seasonal farm markets.
It’s the last week of January. Remnants of the latest snow storm are all around. The sky is gray. The ground is gray. Everything is gray. You find yourself yearning for the bright, warm days of summer and even the humid ones. You’re growing tired of root vegetables and storage crops but you’d prefer not to buy produce all the way from California, South America or even further afield. What to do?
Sara and Adam Gordon of Winter Sun Farms Greater Philadelphia have the solution. Buy a 5-month subscription in Winter Sun Farms, a unique community-supported agriculture (CSA) program that provides summer vegetables and fruits, flash frozen at the height of the growing season, and distributes them during the winter months. Imagine opening packages of cleaned, cut and ‘pot ready’ vegetables and fruits in the middle of winter, all produced and grown within 150-200 miles of Philadelphia on small and medium sized farms. Read More.
