THANKSGIVING - MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. There are no gifts to buy, no expectation of anything except loved ones coming home, only expressions of gratitude and the memory of past traditions being repeated.
But staying grounded and maintaining awareness of that gratitude can be a challenge. House guests disrupt your routine. The return of college age children can bring new challenges. Long buried dysfunctional family patterns can re-emerge; yes, very few families function as perfectly as we see in traditional holiday movies. After all, we are human and not actors and actresses. Finally, we eat in a way that, if sustained, would induce some major health problems. Even with these challenges the holidays are special times.
Here’s what I do to minimize stress and be mindful of the abundance all around me.
• Expectations: Try not to have any preconceived notions of what the weekend will bring. When I allow things to unfold instead of trying to control everything, I can truly enjoy connecting with others. (This is not the same thing as not planning, which I sometimes am guilty of and definitely causes stress.)
• Get enough sleep. It can be tempting to spend every possible moment with family we don’t get to see often by skipping out on sleep. But inadequate rest is a one way ticket to Suckville.
• Eat everything, but in moderation. Give away or freeze some of the leftovers so you’re not eating all those rich foods for the next week.
• Take a moment in the busy-ness to look around at all those you love and feel how much they love you back.
No matter what the state of our lives at any moment, we are truly rich, with the things that really count.
Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy.

THANKSGIVING COOKING MADE EASY
Each and every year, I make it my mission to bring something to the Thanksgiving table that our family has never experienced before. While we all enjoy our handed-down family recipes, our relatives have come to expect a unique surprise from my oven each year. The added excitement brings a bit of freshness to a holiday rich in tradition.
The secret to my success cannot be attributed to my culinary prowess, or even the Food Network. There are no unique creations flowing from within me. I happily admit that I cheat each and every time.
Step one of my process begins with a visit to the various manufacturer websites from our favorite cooking companies. Companies like Viking, Miele, Dacor, and Wolf/SubZero employ in-house chefs to create recipes that help to showcase their product features. The benefit is that they post these recipes on their websites for the rest of us to steal.
Here are just a few of my family’s favorite offerings from recent years.
Dacor Perfect Turkey
Miele Gluten-Free Apple Spice Cake - input desert, gluten-free foods to find recipe
Viking Sweet Potato Crumble
Now, here are some photos of earlier Thanksgivings before I found these great resources. You can see why these sources are so much easier.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY - BUY LOCAL
The 2nd annual Small Business Saturday® is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year. On November 26, we're asking millions of people to shop small at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy. When we all shop small, it will be huge.
You can support the cause and help revive the local economy by shopping at the locally-owned businesses in your community. Buy their products. Eat their food. Use their services. In turn, these locally owned and operated businesses will continually pump your hard-earned dollars back into the local economy by way of taxes, payrolls and purchases. This means more money for roads, schools, services and new jobs in your community.
Invest in your community by shopping at you local indepedent businesses. Locate independently owned businesses in your community.

We thank our veterans, all of the men and women of the armed forces and their families for their selfless service.

Biophillic Holiday Decorations
Last month, I wrote about biophillic design (What is Biophillic Design?) and the myriad of benefits it provides. Now that the holidays are upon us, we can really put this into practice.
Starting in the 15th century and perhaps even earlier, Europeans and eventually Americans have been celebrating the harvest and winter solstice in various ways, one of which is decorating with greens, fruit, garlands and candles. This tradition, of taking the bounty of nature and bringing it inside to remind us that abundance surrounds us, is truly restorative. Another way this benefits us is that it allows us to reaffirm our family rituals and connect with those closest to us. Each year, we decorate, bake and come together, strengthening the bonds with family and dear friends.
In the busy-ness of the season, take some time to renew your spirit:
* Use seasonal fruits and vegetables in your home for inexpensive and ultimately edible displays. You don’t need any fancy supplies. A pumpkin in the center of the table, surrounded by greens, leaves and apples looks festive and adds beauty to your decor.
* A few tall hurricanes filled with pinecones, cranberries, lentils or anything you have on hand, can make great bases for candles. Fill them, line them on the center of your table and add a tapered or votive candle for instant warmth and mood enhancement.
* Add family! Decorating with children and elders creates memories year after year that will strengthen family bonds. For a while there, I was so overwhelmed at holiday time I didn’t even have energy to put up a Christmas tree. One year, I suggested my two daughters each invite their best friend to have a tree decorating party. They did all the work, it looked amazing and they had so much fun that it became our new tradition. My girls are now in high school and college and the same two friends come over every year for this much anticipated holiday party. What was once a chore to me has turned into something we all look forward to.
So, this year, take a breath and bring the gifts of the earth inside to remind you of your aliveness. Let the beauty of our natural world reconnect you to your family and your own true nature.
